Movie Review: Glass

Glass (2019) by M. Night Shyamalan

(Last movie to Unbreakable trilogy or Eastrail 177)

First, I am an M. Night Shyamalan defender. So fuck you Rotten Tomatoes. 35% isn’t a good representation. I like anything Shyamalan. So any movies directed and/or written by him can feed my appetite though not all on the same level. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t patronize his bad movies. I just have so much respect for him and his vision.

The first part of Glass is perfection. It’s nostalgic. I can’t contain my emotions seeing David and his son teaming up like a tandem between Batman and Alfred. I missed their camaraderie. Glass shows a realistic approach to a superhero-villain movie. David Dunn is a realistic version of Superman. The Horde is a realistic version of a villain. Very different from the villains we see on Marvel/DC movies. Same thing with Glass. He is a true mundane depiction of a Mastermind.

James McAvoy’s performance deserves a wide praise. He is great. Some scenes/shots are just exceptional.

And here comes the third act. I’m not saying it’s bad but I can see why the viewers may have split responses to Glass. First, the end is anticlimactic. That surely leads to disappointment. I like the ending myself. I find it fitting to end the trilogy in that manner because that’s the point: Real superheroes and villains are not supposed to have climactic showdown. The whole thing is pictured to be real. That’s Night’s vision and it had to materialize over the mainstream climax.

Second, the twist/s are not so impressive. Shyamalan is known for plot twists. In fact, his Sixth Sense is always associated with movies’ unexpected endings. So I understand why people are always watching out for a major bomb to drop. Yes, Glass carries some revelations but they are not as appealing as his previous works.

And third, the story’s display of morale is questionable. Mr. Glass isn’t the main villain of the story (and neither is The Beast) but that doesn’t liberate him from the terrible things he’s done. Glass should not be regarded as a victim. And you’d also question some of the characters’ decisions.

There are still so many things to love and appreciate in this movie. I’m always generous with Shyamalan, his stories have never ceased to amaze me. I’m giving Glass 4 bananas out of 5. #glass #moviereview
